week 5-Political Activism/Deviant Behaviour Online

Karen Kilgariff and Georgia Hardstark the Duo that are responsible for the podcast my favourite murder.

They have been accused of been bigots, privileged and hateful. There is a twitter page called Stay Sexy, Don’t Be Racist.   witch is a pun on their catchphrase ‘Stay sexy and don’t get murdered.’ The twitter page accuses the two as being white supremacists.

This started because fans made subpages for my favorite murder. One of the subpages made was a fan page for people of color. Some fans had a negative response to this as they said it was “reverse racism’ The admin of the trend shut it down. This was seen by some of the fans as racist because the shut down the page rather than attempting to correct the bad behour.

The person running the twitter page blame Karen and Georgia because they didn’t call out the fans for their behaviour on this fan page and that denying racism is racism .

This could be seen as “naming and shaming” the two for being racist by not stopping racism witch is a kind of online activism. Or it could be seen as Deviant Behaviour Online on the part of the owner of the twitter page. As there where fan pages Karen Kilgariff and Georgia Hardstark where unlikely to see it at first, how where they to comment on it?

The two then did comment on the incident saying that the behavior of the fans where wrong and now fans will no longer be able to comment on here official facebook page. They stated that if they themselves did no say any of the hateful things that they should not be responsible.

someone then wrote a transcript of what Karen and Georgia said and wrote their own take on what they meant. https://medium.com/@SSDBRacist/let-me-fix-that-for-you-pt-2-b1dff65ed93d

I personally feel that twitter page is overkill and once the two commented on the incident the page should of been taken down because the reason people where saying they are racist was on the premise that ignoring racism is racism.

However as a white person maybe i am so removed from the situation, i’m missing something .

week 4 blog-Online Communities

In this blog i will be discussing online communities. The fans of my favourite murder are known as Murderino’s. They express their fandom by communicating on online communities such as Facebook and Twitter.

so what is an online community? Howard Rheingold describes an online communities in A Slice of Life in My Virtual Community as

a group of people who may or may not
meet one another face to face, and who exchange words and ideas through the mediation
of computer bulletin boards and networks. In cyberspace, we chat and argue, engage in
intellectual intercourse, perform acts of commerce, exchange knowledge, share emotional
support, make plans, brainstorm, gossip, feud, fall in love, find friends and lose them,
play games and metagames, flirt, create a little high art and a lot of idle talk. We do
everything people do when people get together, but we do it with words on computer
screens, leaving our bodies behind.

The comments on these sites would indicate that the fans engage with each other and the duo quite a lot in the offline world.

A lot of the engagement with the duo online included fan art, likes, re-shares etc.

I think the Murderino engage in all aspect that are described as been online community behaviour and i think they do so in a positive way. Online communities seem to be a way in which to keep your fanbase growing and crucial way to share your content.

week 6

Kilgariff and Hardstark the duo that created the podcast my favourite murder have an upcoming book  titled Stay Sexy & Don’t Get Murdered. The fraze the two say as a way of signing off at the end of the podcast

This show how online content has a way of moving to the offline world.

the book will be a mix of true crime, humour and have a big element of autobiographical aspects from both Georgia Hardstark and Karen Kilgariff.

This will mimic the feel of there podcast. In the beginning of every podcast there a huge chunk of time dedicated to banter and talk between the two before they transition into a true crime story.

subjects covered in the book will be their personal struggle with depression, eating disorders, and addiction.

They have hinted at these struggles in a humorous and lighthearted way on the podcast but never went into any kind of detail.

I wonder how the audience will react to the book with such a huge chunk of the book being about the duo’s personal lives and very little been on true crime. However the two hinted to the fact that they will be discussing personal true crimes experiences.

They posted the cover of their book onto their instagram page. Their Online communities seem be where they do their advertising. I haven’t heard them mention the book on there podcast however.

week 3 blog-fans

The group of people I am going to be examining on over the next few weeks is podcast fans of My favorite Murder.

My favorite Murder is hosted by Karen Kilgariff and Georgia Hardstark. On the podcast they read real life murder stories. At the beginning of week they each choose one murder to talk about, then at the end of the week they read stories emailed in my fans about famous murders in their home towns. They do this in a light-hearted and humorous fashion while still respectful of the victims and the seriousness of the topics.

In resent years they have gained larger popularity, possibly due to the increase in true crime content available such as making a murder, Conversations with a Killer: The Ted Bundy Tapes, missing in plain site. etc

The pair are frequently in the top podcasts on the iTunes charts, even reaching number one in 2016. They have a 316,133 person following on Facebook and a 240K following on twitter,. They also have there own website. These are all ways fans can potently contact the duo and engage with one another.

Unlike many podcasts My favorite Murder doesn’t just exist online. The two travel around America doing live performances. They record the shows and post them as Podcasts. This is away fans can participate offline with them and each other.

The two are currently awaiting the release of their book stay Sexy and Don’t Get Murdered. The catch phase they use to end the recording.
